The Horse – Our dear friends

Posted by tomtroughton on June 14, 2009 under Horse - Main, Horse - Stories, Horse Jewelry, Horse Lover Gifts | Be the First to Comment

I was talking with a friend last night and asked her “Have you been riding your horse lately?” Her answer was very emotional. She said “I don’t ride anymore, my horse died this  Spring.” At first there was bit of silence and then she started talking about how much she missed her horse. The horse had been her loving companion for the last 24 years.

Her horse was more like a family member than a pet. He had been there through “thick and thin” with her. They saw many trails and beautiful sites together and I’m sure she has many memories that are as precious to her as the memories of a lost family member would be to most people.

This love between a horse and horse rider is so beautiful. In many instances, they share more beautiful moments together than in any other way.

Adore your animals and appreciate every moment with them, you never know when it could be their last. For that matter, adore your human friends and appreciate every moment with them too. It’s a wonderful way to live.

The Walking Horse

Tennessee Waling Horse

Tennessee Waling Horse

The walking horse does a step followed by either a running step, single step, a stepping pace or a stepping pace and a canter.

A walking horses gait generally would not include a trot which differentiates it from gaited horses.

Tennesee walking horses are generally what comes to mind when someone mentions walking horses, but there are actually many breeds that would be considered true walking horses.

A difference between the gaited horse and the walking horse is that gaited horses always do the trot as one of his gaits. They usually do five different gaits. although three gaited competition is also popular. These gaits include the trot, walk, slow gait, singlefoot and  the canter. The Saddlebred is the most popular gaited horse that comes to mind.

On the other hand, the walking horse does not trot. The Walking Horses’ steps are defined by the timing and tempo of the steps. The speed varies but the basic movent is a steady and has a consisent moving and lifting action. The Rhythm is often energetic and has exquisite timing. The head is held high with the back arched gives the classical look so popular with the “walkers.” It gives an effect of actually having a shorter body and longer legs. The “Walking Horses” are definitely one of the most popular events of horse shows.

Morgan Horse

The “Morgan Horse” is an American Breed of horse. Justin Morgan acquired a colt in 1789 and named him Figure. Figure was the founding sire of all the Morgan Horses. There is a book about “Figure” called Justin Morgan Had a Horse. There is post in the Findings Blog about the book. http://writer2b.wordpress.com/2008/03/26/justin-morgan-had-a-horse/

Some Morgan Horses have ”Bay Characteristics” of the brown body and black mane and tail. Although the colors do vary. One beautiful variation is black with brown mane and tail. They are gentle and easy-going and great with kids.

Morgan HorseMorgan Horses are often used in show arenas. With their upright powerful build they are great for trail riding, jumping, and were originally used for plowing fields and by their ealry owners. If one word describes the Morgan Horse it would have to be “versatility”. The horse is a great all around animal.

There is a wonderful association called The American Morgan Horse Association or the AMHA. It features registry information and even a magazine dedicated to the Morgan Horse. The association also has news and dates of upcoming events.

American Paint Horse

The American Paint Horse was used by Native Americans and was thought to be introduced by the Spainairds. They migrated into the other heards of horses in the plains area of the United States. As well as the Native Americans, they were also used extensively by cowboys. They are very friendly, but also high spirited. They are fantastic for hearding cattle. The reason for the name “American Paint Horse” are their prominent colors. They can either be a light color with darker markings or the other way around, dark color with lighter markings.

Pintos are often included in the American Paint Horse group of breeding, although some breeder associations will divide the two into different subgroups. The word “Pinto” means “Paint” in the Spanish language.  The American Paint Horse is definitely a well rounded versatile horse. Great for riding, work, or showing.
