Beautiful time of year to Horseback Ride

Horseback Riding

What a beautiful time of year for horseback riding. In many parts of the nation, the trees are blooming, the wildflowers are starting to bloom and the birds and other creatures come rushing out of the quietness of winter.

This has always been my favorite time of year to ride. There is something magical about riding a horse through a forrest that is exploding with life.

As a young boy, I remember riding “Blanca.”  She was an Appaloosa who loved the barn. When I was able to encourage her with much prodding to leave the barn, we had such a wondrous time. I guess her hesitancy for leaving the barn was due to my lack of riding skills. Nevertheless, she put up with me and gave an “eleven year boy”  much adventure.

I hope many boys and girls, as well as older “horse lovers”, find the time to enjoy horseback riding this spring / summer season. Whether it is your first time or one among numerous times, you can enjoy the adventure.

Kentucky Derby 135th Annual

Nothing brings out the stars and the super rich like the Kentucky Derby!

Mine That Bird

Mine That Bird

Jockey, Calvin Borel wins on “Mine That Bird“, a 50-1 long shot.  One of the amazing “stats” is that he took his horse from “dead last” to first!

Mine That Bird won by an amazing 6 3/4 lengths, making this one of the biggest upsets ever in Kentucky Derby history. I wish I would have had a few thousand on the horse who was sold for only $9500 as a yearling! (Beats the 2 million dollars a couple of others sold for)

Celebrities attending the event were

  • Bethenny Frankel
  • Kim Kardashian
  • LeAnn Rimes
  • Valerie Bertinelli
  • Joey Faltone
  • “Kid Rock”
  • Travis Tritt
  • Brooke Shields

and many many more!

For a race that last close to two minutes and has over 150, 000 attendees, it is truly a piece of American history. Sometimes the race winners go exactly as the odds predict and at other time, you never know what will happen at the Kentucky Derby. (Louisville KY)

Morgan Horse

Posted by tomtroughton on January 16, 2009 under Horse - Main, Horse Breeds, Morgan Horse, Tom Troughton | Read the First Comment

The “Morgan Horse” is an American Breed of horse. Justin Morgan acquired a colt in 1789 and named him Figure. Figure was the founding sire of all the Morgan Horses. There is a book about “Figure” called Justin Morgan Had a Horse. There is post in the Findings Blog about the book. http://writer2b.wordpress.com/2008/03/26/justin-morgan-had-a-horse/

Some Morgan Horses have ”Bay Characteristics” of the brown body and black mane and tail. Although the colors do vary. One beautiful variation is black with brown mane and tail. They are gentle and easy-going and great with kids.

Morgan HorseMorgan Horses are often used in show arenas. With their upright powerful build they are great for trail riding, jumping, and were originally used for plowing fields and by their ealry owners. If one word describes the Morgan Horse it would have to be “versatility”. The horse is a great all around animal.

There is a wonderful association called The American Morgan Horse Association or the AMHA. It features registry information and even a magazine dedicated to the Morgan Horse. The association also has news and dates of upcoming events.

American Paint Horse

Posted by tomtroughton on January 12, 2009 under American Paint Horse, Horse - Main, Horse Breeds, Tom Troughton | Be the First to Comment

The American Paint Horse was used by Native Americans and was thought to be introduced by the Spainairds. They migrated into the other heards of horses in the plains area of the United States. As well as the Native Americans, they were also used extensively by cowboys. They are very friendly, but also high spirited. They are fantastic for hearding cattle. The reason for the name “American Paint Horse” are their prominent colors. They can either be a light color with darker markings or the other way around, dark color with lighter markings.

Pintos are often included in the American Paint Horse group of breeding, although some breeder associations will divide the two into different subgroups. The word “Pinto” means “Paint” in the Spanish language.  The American Paint Horse is definitely a well rounded versatile horse. Great for riding, work, or showing.
